A Sticky Situation – The Great Molasses Flood of 1919

It is the afternoon of January 15, 1919, and chaos has overtaken Boston’s North End. A 50-foot molasses tank has just exploded, releasing a fast-moving, debris-filled wave that is sweeping through streets, crushing buildings, and trapping civilians. Emergency services are overwhelmed, communication is scattered, and the full extent of casualties remains unknown.

Delegates in this crisis must act immediately. Emergency efforts must be coordinated, resources allocated, and delegates must make quick and effective decisions to protect the population as the situation evolves.

Head Chair: Emilia Rodriguez

Hello Delegates, My name is Emilia Rodriguez. I am a freshman here at Davis. I am currently an international relations major. I will be the crisis chair for the Great Molasses Flood of 1919 committee at DMUNC XXIII. I can’t wait to meet you all, and have a great time in committee! I just wanted to say that I have been where you are right now, as I previously did MUN in Highschool and my best piece of advice for this conference is to be confident in what you say, and have fun!

Crisis Director: Lauren Deutsch

Lauren Deutsch is a 4th year Political Science Major at UC Davis. She participated in Model UN during all 4 years of highschool and again at community college before transferring to Davis. She is incredibly excited to be serving as President of Davis Model UN and even more so to chair at this year’s conference. Outside of MUN, she loves to read, bake, thrift, and is on a constant search to find the best coffee and boba. She’s very excited to see everyone in committee!
