United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)

Founded in 1945, the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is one of the organization’s principal bodies. Focused on social, economic, and environmental development, it serves as a vital body in achieving progress for the Sustainable Development Goals.

Topic A: The Development of Sustainable Agricultural Practices in the Face of Climate Change

Climate change is an ever-pressing humanitarian crisis. Unpredictable and intensified patterns of weather have the potential to drastically disrupt local and commercialized food industries. Disruption of key industries would threaten overall food supply and security. In addition to directly targeting climate change, it is vital that the global food supply system shifts to more sustainable practices.

This committee is tasked with exploring various methods to promote the development of sustainable agricultural practices while balancing economic development, efficiency, and practicality. The committee should also expect to engage in discussion about the role of biotechnology in crop cultivation and general implementation of proposed agricultural systems.

Topic B: The Protection and Empowerment of Women in Economic Development

Despite significant strides in reducing gender inequality, women and girls continue to face systemic discrimination and inequality across the globe. Current global economic empowerment is stagnant, and women in the labor force are significantly underrepresented compared to their male counterparts. Inclusion of women in economic development has the potential to reduce gender inequality while simultaneously stimulating national and global GDP. A change of economic model to become more representative and inclusive is vital in closing the gender gap and in achieving overall gender equality.

This committee is tasked with exploring different ways to increase representation of women in economic development while considering current discrimination within labor fields, lack of social protections, and overall gender inequality. This committee should also expect to engage in discussion about female participation in the informal economy and how to ensure lasting economic empowerment.
