UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) – Novice Committee

Topic: Asylum Seeking in Latin America and the United States Border Crisis

Committee Description

Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1950 in response to the displacements of the Second World War, the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Operating in 137 countries, UNHCR is committed to saving lives, protecting rights, and crafting a brighter future for those compelled to flee their homes due to conflict and persecution.

Since 1965 the number of asylum seekers and immigrants from Latin American countries to the United States has increased drastically. Propelled by increasing violence, political instability, and economic challenges, many have left their homes in search of greater opportunities. As nations accepting refugees claim to have hit a limit in capacity, extreme measures have been taken by both Nations accepting Asylum seekers and their neighbors.

This committee is tasked with exploring viable strategies to respect and protect the rights and dignity of these individuals under international law. It also aims to address the logistical, social, and political complexities associated with mass human migrations. The committee will engage in discussions concerning border security, the ethical dimensions of immigration policies, and the humanitarian obligations of the United States and other regional nations.

Head Chair: Luca Alito

Note: This committee is intended for delegates who are new to Model UN. This committee will go at a slower pace, contain only one topic, and include review and question time for Model UN procedures. Awards will be decided based on growth and improvement throughout the committee.
